The “Saving salina for nature and people” project contributes to the restoration of the Ulcinj Salina

We are excited to present the success story of the “Saving Salina for Nature and People” project. This important project, which spanned more than ten years, has revitalized Montenegro’s most valued wetlands, Ulcinj Salina. This project, led by Ksenija Medenica, is proof of the effectiveness of committed environmental advocacy, stewardship, and action at local, regional, and global levels.

The Ulcinj Salina, known for its rich biodiversity and ecological importance, had long awaited a restoration initiative of this importance. The project activities included various measures to restore the wetland’s natural habitats. These efforts included restoring water management systems, habitat improvements for local and migratory bird species, and bringing back salt work to local communities.

This video provides an in-depth look into the restoration work, offering viewers a unique glimpse into the changes that have taken place at Ulcinj Salina and documenting the entire process of this restoration project.

About Reviving Ulcinj Salina:

The Ulcinj Salina, a Ramsar site, is one of Europe’s most important stopping points for migratory birds. It was built in the 1930s and was a valuable source of income for local communities. However, in 2013, salt production ceased, and the salt ponds were left to dry. EuroNatur Foundation, in partnership with BirdLife Europe, Central Asia, CZIP, MSJA, and the Tour du Valat, launched the #SaveSalina international campaign to promote action at local, regional, and global levels to protect and restore this unique Adriatic coastal wetland.
